They called it a New Spiritual Age. With the first non-bender president elected to office and the spirits living among us, things are looking up or, at least, that what all the movers say. The Equalists have been defeated and there are even new airbenders popping up all over the city as the Air Nation is rebuilding itself from the ashes of the hundred year war.

A New Spiritual Age....yeah right.

Republic City still reeling from the wreckage and overgrowth of the spirits, the Avatar has left, and the president and his advisers are too busy squabbling and begging other nations for relief aid to do any real work. The police force have their hands full just trying to keep the day to day city functions running smoothly, with spirits running wild they are stretched thin and are having to turn a blind eye to the plight of the people.

In this crumbling power structure the Triads have rose back up with people turning more and more to the black market and protection rackets than the law to solve their problems. However, it's not just the old familiar faces anymore either. New Triads are popping up every day, with ambitious benders looking for a piece of the action. Also, The Equalists may be gone, but not forgotten, as those that avoided capture are now using mechanized weapons and chi-blocking techniques to carve out their own slice of the underworld. Also not all of the new airbenders are interested in the monastic life and have taken to use their new found abilities skills for petty crime.

Then there's the spirits. They cause just as much trouble as the Triads if not more. Black market trade is booming as illegal poachers are capturing these spirits and selling them to wealthy clients as pets.

While the old vices like opium, liquor and other taste are still tried and true word on the streets is there's a new liquor called Xiānjìng gaining popularity in both black market and high society circles alike, rumored to be distilled in the spirit world. A glass of the golden liquid can send you on a euphoric trip into the spirit world, however the stuff is addicting and what seems like heaven can quickly turn into hell and you may not be able to wake back up and find yourself caught between worlds. The stuffs been banned by the authorities...but that's never stopped people before.

So don't let the movers and the new paint job fool you, this city is just as dangerous and dirty as it ever was
